OTTAWA – A new scholarship program promoting leadership in aviation has been launched by InterVISTAS Consulting Inc. and the Canadian Airports Council (CAC). The Gerry Bruno Scholarship will award $5,000 to an undergraduate and/or graduate student pursuing a career in aviation management, planning, marketing and/or policy.

“This scholarship program recognizes that a highly specialized education is necessary for someone who plans to pursue a career as an aviation professional,” said Deb Meehan, chief executive officer of InterVISTAS, which is sponsoring the scholarship in honor of its founder. “This scholarship has been named after Gerry Bruno, a respected leader in commercial airport management, who has had a long successful career in aviation policy and consulting.”

Gerry Bruno, who has worked in the area of aviation for more than 40 years, has been vice president, federal government affairs for the Vancouver Airport Authority since 2013. Prior to this role, he founded and built up InterVISTAS into a global consulting firm, as its chief executive officer from 1997 to 2013. From 1992 to 1997, he was vice president, marketing and strategic planning for the newly created Vancouver Airport Authority where he was at the forefront of the vision to develop the airport into a premier Asia-Pacific Gateway. He also held a number of management positions while working at Transport Canada for 17 years prior to working for the airport authority and InterVISTAS.

“A career in aviation is one of the most rewarding occupations you can have,” said Daniel-Robert Gooch, president of the Canadian Airports Council. “We are excited about the scholarship program, and the financial help it will provide to someone who has the potential to show leadership and innovation in aviation, like Gerry Bruno has successfully done.”

The scholarship will be awarded biennially. This year’s winner will be announced at the Airports Canada Conference & Exposition this fall in Toronto. An application can be found www.cacairports.ca, or at http://www.scholarshipscanada.com/.
