GENERAL SUMMARY

The Manager, Sustainability & Resiliency will primarily be responsible for facilitating and ensuring the implementation and integration of sustainability and resiliency practices and policies. Manager identifies, assesses and resolves problems concerning  all airports within the Indianapolis Airport Authority’s (IAA) system of airports. This position will interact with IAA staff, airport tenants, contractors, consultants, federal agencies, and potentially community leaders and neighborhood organizations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

  • Manage the IAA’s sustainability and resiliency program.
  • Oversee the development of the Indianapolis International Airport Sustainability Management Plan (SMP); implement sustainability and resiliency initiatives as outlined in the plan, monitor achievement of key performance indicators, and make revisions to achieve the IAA’s sustainability and resiliency goals
  • Report on IAA’s sustainability efforts which include both qualitative and quantitative metrics; identify trends and recommend opportunities for improvement
  • Perform research and provide subject matter expertise in all or some of the following: energy management, greenhouse gas tracking and reduction strategies, electrification and alternative fuels, water consumption and quality, land management, waste reduction, proactive environmental programs, operational sustainability, climate and operational resiliency, and community and social well-being
  • Perform and maintain working knowledge of operating and maintenance activities and environmental best practices relevant to IAA’s facilities.
  • Coordinate as needed with IAA Departments on matters relating to  sustainability and resiliency.
  • Assist Director, Environmental and Sustainability with Properties and retail divisions to ensure adherence to IAA sustainability and resiliency policies at all properties and by all tenants.
  • Assist Director, Environmental and Sustainability as needed in preparation and management of FAA budget (capital and operating) for environmental and sustainability programs and as otherwise directed.
  • Evaluate projects from inception through the planning, design, and construction for opportunities to implement sustainability and resiliency improvements
  • Assist in bid documentation preparation for upcoming opportunities
  • Support the implementation of different sustainability rating systems such as LEED, Envision, Park Smart, etc.
  • Stay abreast of local, state and federal environmental and related guidelines, policies, regulations, legislation and funding revisions and opportunities and work within the IAA to address any new/revised requirements and opportunities.
  • Communicate impacts and opportunities to airport officials and assist in developing and implementing appropriate strategies.
  • Assist Director, Environmental and Sustainability in creating and administering IAA environmental, sustainability, and resiliency policies.
  • Assist Director, Environmental and Sustainability in all aspects of individual Capital Improvement Plan project development and implementation; recommend capital improvement projects that align with sustainability and resiliency principals.
  • Initiates, in conjunction with other departments, education and training to ensure that employees are equipped to operate the airport in a sustainable manner.
  • Provide input and directional objectives to achieve departmental strategic objectives in line with FAA strategic goals.
  • Supervise and mentor assigned staff; Coordinate and manage the work of skilled and junior personnel on multiple projects
  • Performs any other functions assigned by Director, Environmental and Sustainability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university with a degree in sustainability, environmental management, environmental science or a related field.
  • Ten to twelve (10-12) years of environmental or sustainability experience within the public and private sectors.
  • Strong leadership skills with minimum two to three (2-3) years of experience managing direct reports.
  • Ability to provide strategic focus.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, tenants, government officials, airport officials and fellow employees.
  • Knowledge of applicable permits and regulations required for airport operations.
  • Ability to effectively impact tenants and airport entities to ensure regulatory compliance for the IAA.
  • Ability to meet schedules and deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Teams/Zoom or ability to become proficient.

POTENTIAL DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Sustainability rating system credential (Ex. ENV SP, LEED AP, etc.)
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM)
  • Knowledge of Airport Carbon Accreditation reporting requirements
  • Experience with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting frameworks

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to walk, sit, use of hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, reach with hands and arms, balance, stop, talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25+ pounds or more. Specific vision abilities required by the position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus. Operate a motor vehicle with a valid driver’s license. Use of a computer and other personal assistance devices (tablets or mobile phone) are a must for this position.
  • Work Environment: This position is performed within an office environment at least 80% of the time. The other 20% the employee will be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. With multiple worksites, the noise level varies from the office environment and the outside environment. The incumbent in this position is expected to work independently and as part of the team.
