Chief of Police
The Greenville-Spartanburg Airport District is seeking a collaborative and resourceful Chief of Police to develop and implement short-and long-term strategies to maintain safety and compliance. The Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) offers a growing, interconnected and welcoming environment, and is pursuing a professional who will lead and mentor as well as consistently identify opportunities for improvement.
The District is seeking a candidate with a forward-thinking spirit to lead the Police Department by exhibiting District values while providing a safe environment for all travelers and visitors of the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport.
The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of ten (10) years of experience in law enforcement with five (5) years in a supervisory/leadership position. Experience in airport policing is desired. A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related field is required, as well as strong verbal and written communication skills.
The Chief of Police manages all Police Department activities to ensure compliance with State, Federal, and Airport Regulations. Performs Department administrative functions. Leads and develops department officers. Reviews airport operations and safety procedures, inspects, reports, and monitors; makes overall recommendations regarding employee, tenant, and public security and safety throughout the Airport. Serves as the Airport Security Coordinator (ASC).
Work is performed under the supervision of the Vice President-Chief Operating Officer, though the District is seeking an individual who can exercise independent judgment and resourcefulness.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Personnel Management
- Applies a servant leadership approach, leading by example and holding people accountable. Develop employees for current and/or upcoming roles.
- Ensure employees have the tools, resources, and training necessary for success.
- Coaches, trains, and motivates employees in a collaborative and inclusive environment.
Functional Duties and Responsibilities
- Under limited supervision, directs the activities of the Airport Police Department.
- Acts as the Airport Security Coordinator.
- Plan, organize, and direct law enforcement activities on airport property, implement airport security procedures and techniques, enforce airport and police department rules and regulations. Enforce Federal and State Laws.
- Recruit and supervise police employees, allocating duties and assigning subordinates to specific duties, direct work schedules, monitor attendance records, recommend personnel actions and carry out other duties associated with law enforcement management.
- Supervise and direct security inspections of the airport premises, making recommendations for corrective actions and keeping records of inspection reports.
- Works closely with airport tenants regarding the security of their facilities.
- Maintain and implement the Airport Security Plan in accordance with Part 1542 of the Federal Aviation Regulations.
- Maintain a liaison with the Federal Security Director.
- Implement all security directives in a timely manner.
- Coordinate closely with the general public and other agencies regarding use of the airport and its facilities.
- Submit an operating budget in a timely manner and requisition and maintain adequate department supplies.
- Shall be available 24 hours a day in the event of an actual or potential emergency.
- Implement airport police duties under the Airport Emergency Plan.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or a related field.
- Minimum of ten (10) years’ experience in law enforcement with a minimum of five (5) years in supervisory/leadership position.
- Policing experience in an airport environment is desired.
Certification Requirements (Must have or willing to obtain)
- Must meet the minimum educational standards required by the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
- Must be certified by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Training Council.
- Successful completion of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy pre-testing, including psychological profile, police officer selection test, polygraph exam, physical, drug/alcohol screening, and the field training program.5
Other Requirements
- Must be able to complete and pass a background investigation, drug screening, and physical examination as per Federal, State, and GSP Airport District requirements.
- Valid Driver’s License
- Latitude/Independent Judgement/Accuracy
- Diligence must be exercised when handling confidential information.
- Reasonable care for equipment/process will prevent injury/damage.
- Responsible for own work but must coordinate work with others.
Working Conditions
- Physical Demand – Use of personal protective equipment is required.
- May be exposed to heat, cold, rain, snow, and a noisy work environment.
- Must possess the ability to perform strenuous physical activities such as the apprehension and arrest of a suspect.
- Engage in sustained physical exertion and perform work under adverse conditions and maintain physical fitness pertinent to the work.
- Mental and/or Visual Demand – Mental and visual demands are high and vary with function performed. Consistent mental attention is needed to respond safely and efficiently.
- Attentiveness to work procedure will reduce potential risk of injury in work areas.
- Exposed to normal office environment and aviation environment.
- Will be subject to recall after normal duty hours and over the weekend, as needed.
Salary range for this positions is $106,042 – $133,142 and is commensurate with experience.
