Position Summary 

Participate in the maintenance and repair of airport equipment and surrounding property and facilities; perform snow removal from airfield runways, taxiways and terminal areas; operate pavement maintenance equipment to repair airfield surfaces and perform a variety of maintenance tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

This is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

Supervision Received and Exercised

Receive general supervision from assigned supervisory or maintenance staff.

Essential and Supplemental Functions 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  (Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the functions listed below)

Perform minor maintenance and repair of airport equipment and surrounding property and facilities; perform mechanical repairs; assist technical staff and electricians with the repair of complex airport mechanical systems as required.
Operate trucks, rollers, tractors, buses, backhoes, dump trucks and other airport equipment and vehicles; inspect equipment and vehicles for repair and maintenance needs; report findings to the mechanics shop.
Operate mechanical scrubbers to clean-up oil and fuel spills.
Maintain runways and related areas; excavate or move materials, dig trenches, clean ditches and maintain a variety of  pavement maintenance equipment including crack saws, pavement routers, crack sealing machine and melters in a safe and effective manner; scoop, shovel, load, dig, blade and roll asphalt.
Maintain airport runways and taxiways; control rain caused erosion around runways and taxiways to ensure runway stability.
Perform construction tasks; construct forms and pour concrete; construct airport fences; build signs.
Mow landscaped areas and medians around runways, taxiways and roads; maintain and repair mowing equipment.
Perform snow removal using snow plows, snow brooms, snow blowers and sand spreaders.
Drive street sweepers on runways, taxiways and in front of terminals to remove sand, dirt and trash.
Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures; maintain effective communications with communications tower.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:Perform building custodial, maintenance and repair functions as required.
Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
Respond to airfield emergencies as requested.
Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Education directly related to the minimum requirements below may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

High school diploma or GED; and

Two (2) years of experience in any combination of the following areas:

construction
paving
facilities or grounds maintenance

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid New Mexico Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class A or B.
Possession of a valid City Operator’s Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.
Must be able to successfully qualify for and maintain a Sunport Access Control Card as determined by the criteria set forth by the policies and guidelines of the Aviation Department and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
Successful completion of a security background check conducted by U.S. Customs & Border Protection, if applicable.

Fence construction and repair methods and techniques

Standard radio communication techniques
Building custodial, maintenance and repair functions
Methods and techniques of general facilities and grounds maintenance
Operational characteristics of airfield maintenance equipment and tools
Occupational hazards and standard safety practices
Pertinent Federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations

Preferred Skills and Ability 

Independently perform the full array of airport facilities maintenance and repair tasks
Interpret, explain and abide by department policies and procedures
Operate a variety of maintenance equipment in a safe and effective manner
Effectively communicate with communications tower
Perform runway sealing and snow and debris removal tasks
Work independently in the absence of supervision
Understand and follow oral and written instructions
Communicate clearly and concisely
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation

Working Conditions 

Environmental:
Airfield environment; work around construction equipment and aircraft; exposure to noise, and inclement weather conditions.

Physical:
Essential and supplemental functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for heavy, moderate or light lifting; walking standing or sitting for prolonged periods; and operating motorized equipment and vehicles.
