Job Title:

Assistant City Attorney Sr. (Aviation)

Summary:

The City of Charlotte owns and operates Charlotte Douglas International Airport, managed by the City’s Aviation Department. This position is part of a team of attorneys within the City Attorney’s Office that is responsible for providing comprehensive legal services to the Aviation Department.

The Assistant City Attorney Sr  for Aviation is physically located at the Airport and reports to the Assistant City Attorney Supervisor assigned to the Aviation Department.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

·       Provide legal advice and counsel on complex legal matters

·       Identify issues within complex operational, business, and legal framework of Airport operations

·       Take initiative to analyze issues providing accurate and timely advice

·       Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal laws and regulations specific to airport operation.

·       Analyze and prepare variety of legal documents

·       Negotiate and draft agreements and settlements

·       Conduct legal research and render legal opinions

·       Represent City at all levels of federal and state courts as needed

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

·       Considerable knowledge of constitutional, federal, state, and local laws affecting airports and municipal government

·       Experience with airport-related issues and/or North Carolina municipal law

·       Experience or interest in Technology or Construction Law is preferred, but not required.

·       Ability to work collaboratively with others

·       Analyze issues from legal and practical perspective and provide clear advice and counsel

·       Possess business acumen with ability to negotiate transactions effectively

·       Ability to master new material quickly, manage diverse legal portfolio and handle fast-paced environment

·       Ability to think creatively to solve problems

·       Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment

·       Knowledge of judicial procedures and rules of evidence

·       Knowledge of established precedents and sources of legal reference applicable to airports and municipalities

·       Ability to prepare and try moderately complex civil cases

·       Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, public, elected and appointed officials and stakeholders

Minimum Qualifications:

·       Doctorate degree from an ABA accredited law school and license to practice law in North Carolina or ability to be admitted into the NC State Bar via reciprocity prior to beginning employment

·       Five (5) years of relevant work experience as a practicing attorney

Salary:

·       Commensurate with Experience
