Job Description

Airfield Electrician

Reports to:   Supervisor, Maintenance

Status:   Non-Exempt

Pay:    Licensed Electrician – $49.40/hr., $51.62/hr. effective 7/1/2026

Unlicensed Electrician – $40.45/hr., $42.27/hr. effective 7/1/2026

Schedule:       Monday – Friday 2:00 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.

Description:

Under general supervision, to perform journey level work in installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical wiring systems, lighting, equipment and airfield lighting systems; and to do other work as required.

Essential Job Functions:

Typical Tasks:

• Installs electrical conduits, fixtures, motors, switches and outlets according to approved codes, working from blueprints, schematic diagrams, oral and written instructions, and sketches
• Tests established circuits for overload and determines circuit requirements for additional electrical equipment
• Tests circuitry and switches for failures or malfunctions, isolates problems, and replaces worn or broken parts and makes repairs on electrical circuits.   Operate equipment such as generators, boom lifts and scissor lifts.   Basic understanding of heating and cooling equipment, commercial appliances, power control panels, and distribution systems.
• Performs inspections, preventative maintenance, diagnosing malfunctions, and repair work on airfield lighting systems
• Performs preventative maintenance on electrical equipment
• Performs minor construction or alterations on facilities in order to install or modify electrical systems and equipment
• Utilizes, hand, power, electrical, and specialized tools related to the trade
• Supervises the work of helpers
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Employment Standards:

• Completion of ADB airfield lighting school and or AAAE airfield lighting ACE certification at time of hiring or within 1-2 years of employment
• Two years supervised hands on experience working on airfield lighting systems preferred
• California journeyman’s card or four years’ experience required
• Possession or ability to obtain before appointment a valid California Driver License, Class C or higher
• Obtain and maintain security clearance as required by the Airport Security Plan and TSA regulations.

Supplemental Information

Knowledge of:

• Principles and practices of installing, maintaining and repairing electrical systems and associated mechanical equipment
• Use of tools and equipment in installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical wiring systems
  NEMA specifications and requirements as related to the repair and installation of wiring systems and equipment.

Ability to:

• Work at the journey level planning tasks, estimating costs, and performing installation maintenance and repair on all types of electrical wiring systems and equipment operating with voltage levels up to and including 5,400 volts
• Diagnose malfunctions of electrical systems and controls and restore to specified operating standards
• Read and comprehend blueprints and schematic diagrams of circuitry
• Determine the scope and difficulty of a job based on an interpretation of oral and written instructions, schematic diagrams, sketches or blueprints
• Supervise helpers assigned to assist on various projects
• Learn and understand State and local laws, ordinances, codes and regulations pertaining to all aspects of electrical wiring systems and equipment installation and maintenance
• Learn and understand FAA Part 139 requirements and FAA Advisory Circular recommendations on the performance requirements, preventative maintenance, and repair of airfield lighting systems
• Work with the hand tools, power tools and testing equipment characteristic of the trade
  Ability to lift, push, pull, move or carry over 50 pounds, and climb ladders
