Syracuse Hancock International Airport operated by Syracuse Regional Airport Authority is a flourishing airport, and looking for a full-time experienced Network Engineer which involves complex programming, configuration, support and maintenance of the Syracuse Regional Airport Authority’s (SRAA) Network. The work requires knowledge of techniques, methods and procedures for installing, configuring, troubleshooting and optimizing all related hardware, software and communication links. This person must be reliable, courteous, tactful, and be effective in dealing with others to request or provide information, ask questions or obtain clarification. The work is performed in accordance with department policies. This position requires participation in after-hours support and on-call rotation to ensure continuous network uptime.

 

Typical Work Activities

  • Network Infrastructure Management: Manages, supports, and oversees the lifecycle of all hardware and software components related to SRAA’s network infrastructure.  This includes operating systems, routers, switches, firewalls, wireless  networks, Software-Defined Networking (SDN), Local Area Networks (LAN), Wide Area Networks (WAN), and Virtual Private Networks (VPN).
  • Security Network Support: Provides comprehensive support for the Syracuse Airport’s campus-wide security network, including hardware, backend software, and office IT-related matters.
  • Network Maintenance: Configures, deploys, maintains, and performs network maintenance, improvements, upgrades, and repairs on all firewalls, switches, servers, and other network equipment.
  • Hardware Management: Handles Return Merchandise Authorizations (RMAs), hardware swaps, and collaborates with third-party Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and cross-functional customer support teams.
  • ISP Troubleshooting: Troubleshoots and investigates Internet Service Provider (ISP) delivery circuits and hardware, working closely with ISPs to minimize downtime to SRAA’s networks.
  • Server Management: Builds and deploys both virtual and on-premises servers, images computers, and evaluates and recommends new technology.
  • System Standards:  Develops and documents system standards for computer and network devices, system diagrams, layouts, and network designs that best meet SRAA system needs.
  • Network Performance Monitoring: Monitors, tests, and reports on the performance of multiple networks, including Wi-Fi point-to-point, and system availability; implements improvements when necessary.
  • Incident Response: Responds to network and service and security incidents, troubleshoots hardware and software issues, and participates in the implementation of new programs and projects.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders and providers, including airport tenants and employees, providing a high level of customer service and support.
  • Network Security: Knowledgeable of network security best practices and cybersecurity frameworks and has experience with designing and remediating networks and systems to meet compliance requirements.
  • Staff Training: May assist in training other staff and performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Experience with Hardware Platforms: Familiarity with hardware from multiple vendors including Cisco, Meraki, Ubiquiti, and HP Nimble. Experience with  industrial switches is a plus.
  • Network Technologies and Protocols: Demonstrated knowledge of Layer 2 and Layer 3 technologies and protocols.
  • Familiarity with application-level protocols such as SNMP, Telnet, FTP, HTTP/S, DHCP, DNS, 802.1x, and IPSec.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to analyze complex situations, utilize troubleshooting skills, and apply creative problem-solving under pressure.
  • Cloud Services: Understanding of Office 365 and Azure Suite, including Exchange, in an enterprise environment.
  • Technical Troubleshooting: Proficiency in diagnosing and resolving technical issues.
  • Security Systems:  Experience with security door controllers and networked camera systems. Ability to gain knowledge of Airport Common Use platforms.
  • Project Management: Familiarity with project management tools. Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects with competing priorities.
  • Networking Equipment: Knowledge of physical networking equipment and best practices for configuration.
  • Technical Documentation: Ability to read, understand, and interpret technical and procedural manuals.
  • Independence: Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing, with customers, management, and staff.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Skilled in developing and maintaining effective interpersonal relations. Ability to work professionally and respectfully with a diverse staff, tenants, and vendors.
  • Instructions: Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Availability: Must be able to work the required schedule, including weekends, holidays, and on-call as needed (and respond within 20 minutes).
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position, which consist of moving from one work location to another, sitting or standing at a workstation for extended periods of time, repetitive use of hands and wrists, and may involve lifting objects weighing up to 25 pounds, with or without a reasonable accommodation.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Open Competitive:

A. Bachelor’s degree, or higher, in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, or a closely related field; or equivalent Military experience/training in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, or closely related field; and 5 years of work-related experience.

B. Associate’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, or a closely related field; or equivalent Military experience/training in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, or closely related field; and 7 years of work-related experience

C. An equivalent combination of experience and training as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).

 

Preferred Qualifications 

The ideal candidate will have 5+ years’ experience in Enterprise Network support and large-scale network operations.

Special Requirements:

· Holds or is willing to obtain certifications specific to SRAA campus security system.

· Must be able to obtain and maintain a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge

**This is a Civil Service provisional position. The incumbent may be required to take an open/competitive exam given by Onondaga County Civil Service and be reachable on the certified list to be eligible to obtain permanent civil service status and retain the position but pending approval of the HELP program may be eligible to be permanently appointed non-competitively.
