Position Summary
Participate in the construction, maintenance, repair and remodeling of facilities/structures and parks; perform a variety of construction tasks involved in the renovation of wooden, concrete, brick or metal City buildings including rough and finish carpentry, masonry, block laying, painting, plumbing, basic electrical, minor welding, plastering, roofing, tiling, fence installation and sheetrock work and perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

Supervision Received and Exercised
Receive general supervision from assigned higher level supervisory or management staff.
Essential and Supplemental Functions
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the functions listed below)
Perform a variety of construction tasks involved in the renovation of wooden, concrete, brick or metal City buildings including rough and finish carpentry, masonry, block laying, painting, plumbing, basic electrical, minor welding, plastering, roofing, tiling, fence installation and sheetrock work.
Perform interior and exterior rough carpentry for buildings, parks and facilities; frame building additions, stairs and ramps.
Construct cement structures and facilities including forms for sidewalks, drivepads, fence posts, gates, gutters, curbs, steps, walks, ramp landings; pour, level and finish cement.
Read and follow blueprints, sketches and diagrams to ensure project specifications are met.
Repair and remodel building interiors; install ceramic floor tiles, carpet and sheet vinyl; install paneling; repair, tape, texture and paint sheetrock.
Construct high-tensile fencing, chain link fencing and other fencing as required; operate hydraulic and power equipment.
Install and repair wood and metal doors, frames and windows; adjust or replace hinges, high security locksets and cores.
Perform finish carpentry; construct office furniture, cabinets, desks, shelving, conference tables, picture frames, ceiling and doors.
Adhere to safe work practices and procedures.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS: Perform project lead supervision and training of laborers or helpers to accomplish construction tasks.
Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.
High school diploma or GED supplemented by thirty (30) credit hours of specialized training in construction, carpentry, plumbing, or welding; and
Two (2) years general construction experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Dependent on position may require a valid New Mexico Driver’s license and a City Operator’s Permit (COP).
When assigned to Aviation:
Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver’s License or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Possession of a City Operator’s Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.
Must be able to successfully qualify for and maintain a Sunport Control Card as determined by the criteria set forth by the policies and guidelines of the Aviation Department and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
Successful completion of a security background check conducted by U.S. Customs & Border Protection, if applicable.

Methods and techniques of general construction and building remodeling
Methods and techniques of general carpentry, block laying, brick laying, painting, fence building and cement work
Operational characteristics of construction equipment and tools
Occupational hazards and standard safety practices

Independently perform rough and finish carpentry, cement finishing, welding and plumbing tasks
Construct and repair a variety of fences
Operate a variety of construction equipment in a safe and effective manner
Perform material and cost estimating for less complex construction jobs

Work independently in the absence of supervision
Communicate clearly and concisely
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
Working Conditions
Environmental:
Field and construction site environment; travel from site to site; work around traffic and construction equipment; exposure to fumes, dust, noise and inclement weather conditions.
Physical:
Essential and supplemental functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for standing, walking, crouching, bending, and climbing for prolonged periods of time; moderate to heavy lifting and carrying; operating motorized vehicles and equipment.
