The Position

The Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority (RTAA) is looking for a dynamic Director of Public Affairs to create, drive, and implement communications strategies, tactics, and delivery. Tactically, this position will create, manage, and maintain internal and external communication strategies for the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority and direct the efforts of the Public Affairs team in their work to successfully fulfill the branding, communication, and customer service efforts of the organization.  This position requires the exercise of sound judgement, enterprise leadership, and collaboration in day-to-day activities as well as crisis communications.

There is one position open, and both internal and external applicants will be considered.

Key Accountabilities

Develop and implement internal and external communication strategies for the RTAA to ensure that unified and consistent messages define and promote the organizational brand, identity and mission. Executes on plans to build visibility for and awareness of the organization’s mission, initiatives, and critical messaging with key stakeholders.

Provide strategic and tactical counsel to President/CEO and Board of Trustees, developing media relations strategies and providing talking points on critical issues. Collaborates with the CEO and executive leadership to develop the “Airport Voice” that will be carried through all communications.

Oversee the development of internal and external communications materials including news releases and clips, fact sheets, newsletters, brochures, and other materials; provides direction on special advertising campaigns as they relate to special Public Affairs initiatives.

Set and drive press strategy. Develops relationships with key reporters and industry publications to enable routine ongoing information sharing to raise the profile of the organization, inform the public of services, and engender good will in the region.

Prepare and/or oversee preparation of press releases. Drives and/or contributes to external company presentations and annual/quarterly reports in a timely manner and ensuring consistency of messaging.

Monitor news sources for competitive information and industry issues and trends and Establish priorities and collaborate on programs related to community engagement, communication strategies, and advocacy group engagement.

Provide leadership and administrative direction to the Public Affairs team in fulfilling their individual internal- and external-facing responsibilities, continually reassessing and adjusting as needed based on internal and external factors.

Direct the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for the RTAA’s community relations programs involving media, Federal, State, and local government officials, and the public. Directs staff to formulate methods for addressing customer service concerns that are consistent with strategies and branding protocols.

Lead cross-functional efforts to identify and address emerging issues of community concern, including air service updates, legislative and regulatory updates that impact the public.

Collaborate and coordinates with other functional areas to develop messaging that authentically promotes the RTAA brand to a range of audiences, evolving communications as needs require.

Provide consistent and timely internal information in partnership with other departments.

Manage, supervise, plan, coordinate, and evaluate the work of assigned staff; recommend appropriate service and staffing levels; assign projects and areas of responsibility; and review and evaluate work product, methods, and procedures and provide training and feedback.

Screen, interview, and select new employees in accordance with established policies, procedures, guidelines, and the terms of the applicable collective bargaining agreements.

Develop and administer the section budget, forecast additional funds needed, monitor, and approve expendi­tures, pre­pare and implement bud­getary adjustments, as necessary.

Develop and administer internal and external communication campaigns that educate the public and stakeholders on RTAA projects.

This position is essential personnel as part of RTAA’s Emergency Response Team and is required to respond to airport incidents as requested/required and requires knowledge of and experience with crisis communications and management tactics and principles.

Entry Salary: $85,075 – $107,195 annually with the opportunity for merit-based increases up to a maximum of $129,314. Initial salary placement will be based upon experience and qualifications.  This is a management at-will position, which is salaried and is exempt from overtime.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Required Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in marketing, public affairs, journalism, business administra­tion, communications, or a closely related field.
  • Required Experience: Ten (10) years of experience in marketing, public affairs, journalism, or other specialized airport management work, which includes five (5) years of management and supervisory experience.
  • Required Licenses: A valid Driver’s License is required at the time of application.

Selection Procedure

Review of Application:  After submission, the application will be reviewed to determine if it is complete and if minimum qualifications are met.  For those applicants found to meet minimum qualifications, the next step of the process will be an application evaluation. Interview Process:  Based on the application evaluation process, only the most qualified applicants will be considered for an interview.  The interview process may include an initial panel interview, followed by subsequent assessment exercises to demonstrate the ability to perform job-related tasks and/or employment interviews with other RTAA personnel.

Pre-Employment Requirements: The RTAA requires each candidate to successfully complete employment history verification prior to being considered for employment.  All employment offers are subject to successful completion/passing of a drug-screening test, a fingerprint criminal history records check, and an Airport Security Badging test.
