Director, Aviation Environment and Sustainability

The Port of Seattle is seeking a Director, Aviation Environment and Sustainability. The Director of Aviation Environment and Sustainability is part of an organization with a mission to become the greenest Port in North America. The Director will make a difference in the region and will lead the transformation of the industry. This position provides strategic direction and senior-level guidance to a diverse and multi-disciplinary team of approximately 25 professionals while fostering a high-performance organization and enhancing community engagement. He or she reports to the Senior Director, Engineering, Environment and Sustainability and works closely with Airport leadership and stakeholders to integrate environmental and sustainability initiatives into and across all airport activities.

The Director provides vision, strategy, and leadership for internationally-recognized programs to meet goals for carbon reduction, energy use, ground transportation, waste reduction and recycling, and other initiatives. This role involves significant influence over the Aviation Division’s capital and operating programs, and links environmental and financial performance. The successful candidate will oversee completion of the Environmental Review for the Sustainable Airport Master Plan and serve as the “Responsible Official” for Airport compliance with the Washington State Environmental Policy Act and provide oversight for Airport compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act. The Director leads the airport’s noise abatement program to include managing staff responsible for noise monitoring, abatement procedure tracking, and public outreach.  This position also will champion the integration of environment and sustainability considerations into the Airport capital program, including regulatory requirements, implementation of the Port’s Sustainable Evaluation Framework, and pursuit of third-party sustainability certifications.

Preferred Requirements:

The successful candidate will have a four-year degree in Environmental Science, Public Policy, Environmental Engineering, Transportation Planning or a related field, with a strong understanding of environmental, issues, regulations, and policies.

A proven leader, the successful candidate will have extensive progressively responsible experience (10+ years) in sustainability, environmental compliance, planning and/or related work preferably in aviation/airports, including supervision and large program management. The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker with the ability to critically assess situations, solve problems, and make decisions. He or she will be known for strong leadership and management and setting and reaching long and short-term goals and objectives and inspiring staff to do the same. The Director will be able to adapt to changing circumstances and assist and guide their staff in their efforts to be innovative.  The Director will be a skilled communicator, both verbally and in writing. They will have experience as a public speaker, developing and delivering presentations, as well as communicating with elected officials, senior leadership, line employees, and external stakeholders.
