Lead, manage, and have ownership and technical responsibility for the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (STIA) signage systems.  Responsible to ensures that the signage assets are designed, maintained, operated, renewed, replaced as needed to provide consistent clear information, meet the wayfinding needs of passengers, and airport regulatory requirements.

This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and duties performed.  Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide oversight, direction, guidance, information, design options, and technical recommendations for signage and wayfinding needs, standards, and policies to Port management and staff, designers, project teams, and tenants for terminal, roadways, garage and outlaying non-terminal facilities.
  • Coordinate signage requirements and considerations with systems and operational requirements and considerations, including structural, electrical, communications, sustainability, space, circulation, and building codes.
  • Develop, maintain, and enforce applicable signage design guidelines and standards.
  • Responsible for design review based on signage standards for capital and Airport Dining & Retail projects (including temporary and permanent wayfinding signage) including construction documentation review, code, safety, design review meetings, and site visits.
  • Initiate, lead, and manage the planning and implementation of facility-related projects or contracts. Example includes: implementation of the Signage Master Plan, Sign Design IDIQ contract, Small Works Contract.
  • Represent signage design and issues on various Port and external initiatives, teams, and committees.
  • Manage signage asset program, including asset identification, inventory, assessment, and documentation of asset modifications in Peoplesoft and CPO annual verification.
  • Delegate work between staff and provide oversight during design, production, and installation
  • Ensure staff (represented and non-represented) are supported through continuing education or development opportunities to learn new technologies, code or regulatory requirements; appropriate design/production tools and equipment; and regularly scheduled meetings.
  • Plan and administer annual operating budgets for Sign Program.

Design knowledge; the tools, theories, techniques and principals involved in the artistic creation, composition and manipulation of imagery, necessary for graphic or digital production. Knowledge of international sign standards, typology, and environmental wayfinding. Knowledge of industry practices, processes, and protocol including sign materials and fabrication methods. Knowledge of current dynamic signage technology and best practices for integrating different sign technology into existing facility. Knowledge of federal, state, and local entities which may govern all or part of the design and message for airports, signage and construction.  Knowledge of sign materials, fabrication methods and costs.

Strong managerial, organizational, supervisory and leadership skills. Strong design, project management, financial management, negotiating/contracting, strategic planning, critical thinking, problem solving and consensus building skills. Strong interpersonal and conflict management skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to work effectively with a range of vendors, fabricators, contractors, project leaders, and stakeholders.

Ability to guide a project from initial stakeholder outreach, through schematic design, design development, construction documents, and construction administration. Ability to translate and explain complex information to stakeholders who may not fully understand the philosophy of wayfinding in transportation facilities and signage standards or best practices. Ability to engage with diverse clients and team members. Ability to read and understand construction, architectural, and other design drawings and technical specifications.  Ability to coordinate with federal, state, and local entities. Exceptional ability to apply and use graphic design skills, including drawing/sketching, typography, concept ideation, color theory, use of texture, spacing and scale, visual presentation development and layout.

Combination of education and experience demonstrating knowledge, skills and abilities equivalent to:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in graphic design, architecture, or a related field; and
  • Eight (8) years of experience in signage and graphics planning, designing, fabrication and maintaining large complex facility.
  • Five (5) years of experience supervising staff to include hiring, assigning tasks, setting goals for performance, providing feedback and coaching, and performance assessment.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Airport Management
  • Ten (10) years of experience in architecture, signage construction and the operations, organization, layout and general wayfinding in an airport environment.
  • AAAE Certified Affiliate Member and/or Airports Council International Affiliate (ACI) Member.
