PORT SENIOR EQUIPMENT MECHANIC

Salary:  $9,709 – $11,988 per month

The Port is currently recruiting for the position of Port Senior Equipment Mechanic. There are currently two vacancies in Maritime and Aviation. Under general supervision, the Port Senior Equipment Mechanic performs diagnosis, maintenance and repair of a wide variety of gasoline, electric and diesel-powered construction and maintenance equipment, including the Port’s vehicle fleet, which requires application of advanced mechanical knowledge and skills to solve most technical problems independently. Leads subordinate personnel as assigned.

 

Typical duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

 

  • Maintains, inspects and repairs gasoline, electric and diesel-powered equipment such as boats, motors, automobiles, pickups, vans, graders, loaders, tractors, rubber tired cranes, pumps, generators (up to 24 volts), sweepers, heavy trucks, buses, crash-fire-rescue vehicles, fireboats and other related types of motorized equipment, including diagnosis and repair of mechanical defects in such equipment.
    Dismantles and overhauls all types of gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines, transmissions, drive-trains, steering systems and rear-end assemblies, as well as hydraulic and electric systems.
    Does minor sheet metal work as required to make equipment useable and serviceable.
    Operates and maintains hand and power tools, welding apparatus and other shop equipment necessary to the work.
    Maintains records of orders, completed repairs, time worked and material used on assigned work.
    Performs field repair work as required.
    Orders parts from monthly vendors; codes purchase tags; shops to locate specialized vendors for assigned work when necessary.
    Oversees contracted equipment maintenance work at contractors’ shops or at Port sites.
    Directs and advises subordinate personnel on jobs requiring assistance.
    Leads subordinate personnel as assigned; in the absence of the Port Equipment Supervisor, handles telephone calls and answers questions from other Port personnel and suppliers.
    Performs other related work as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

 

This examination is open to persons who have a combination of education and experience that would reflect possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position. A typical combination would include the following:

 

Education:  Graduation from high school or its equivalent and completion of an approved apprenticeship program or acceptable equivalent training.

 

Experience:  Four years of experience as a journey-level mechanic on a wide variety of equipment maintenance and repair work, including one year of experience on heavy equipment.

 

Licenses: Must possess a valid California Class B driver’s license at the time and for the duration of appointment. Must participate in the mandatory D.O.T. drug and alcohol testing program pursuant to the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 49 (49 CFR), Parts 40 and 382 effective January 1, 1996, and the Port of Oakland’s policy #AP304.

 

Additional Requirements:  This classification requires each incumbent to successfully complete a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check, which will include a fingerprint-based Criminal History Records Check (CHRC) and a Security Threat Assessment (STA), prior to being considered for this position. This status must be maintained for the duration of employment.

 

If a position in this classification is assigned to the harbor work location, the Department of Homeland Security requires all employees to be in possession of a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). This status must be maintained for the duration of employment at the Harbor.

 

Must be available for on-call duty as required by emergency situations or as required for uninterrupted operations.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

Requires knowledge of the tools, materials and methods currently used in equipment maintenance and repair, operating principles of internal combustion engines, the principles of leadership, theory and operation of pumps, generators and related equipment, theory and operation of electrical and hydraulic components and related equipment.

 

Successful candidates will have the ability to diagnose mechanical troubles and determine appropriate maintenance and repair work on a wide variety of equipment; perform maintenance and repair work on a wide variety of equipment; operate diagnostic and repair equipment; work independently within established guidelines; provide direction to lower-level personnel; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties; and to work as a team.
