Public Information Officer (Executive Level)

Houston Airport System

Manages the daily operations of the public information function, including overseeing staff responsible for research and compilation of statistical and historical data.

Represents the department as spokesperson and acts as a liaison between the department and the community. Attends various civic, council and business meetings, public dedications and other public-event activities.
Oversees the preparation and distribution of responses to all media requests, information interviews, public inquiries and City Council requests, ensuring accuracy and promptness.
Lead the development of communications risk mitigation plans, including crisis communications preparedness and planning.
Collaborate proactively with internal business unit leaders to ensure that the airport system’s messages, programs, and products/services are in alignment.
Lead the development of effective social media strategies that continuously inform customers and enhance the overall customer experience.
Develop metrics to evaluate efforts and results, specifically in media outreach and social media communications.
Plan annual communication budgeting; act as steward for quarterly business and budget planning
Spearhead efforts for external communication tools such as the annual report and State of the Airports event
Coordinate media strategies with key stakeholders when necessary, such as FAA, CBP, TSA & others
Oversee the activities of the Public Information Officer in developing a proactive media outreach program, establishing relationships with key media outlets to achieve placement in top-tier business, trade and news media outlets.

Must be able to pass a criminal background check, obtain and maintain federally mandated security clearances where required.

There are no major sources of discomfort, i.e., essentially normal office environment with acceptable lighting, temperature and air conditions.

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Public Administration or a closely related field.

Five years of progressive professional experience in media, public relations or a closely related field are required.


PREFERENCESPreference will be given to applicants with:

A Master’s degree in a related field.
Demonstrated knowledge, experience and responsibilities in relaying information  and fielding questions.
Demonstrated skills in strategy development, business management and decision making, effective leadership, communications and media relations.
Ability to communicate effectively and establish and maintain cooperative relationships with airport tenants, City and Houston Airport System officials, and the general public.
In-depth communications knowledge, as well as strong business, and writing skills.
