Senior Architect – Aviation

Under direction, is responsible for performing professional work managing the development, review, and approval of the design and construction of airport buildings and facilities and providing technical assistance to other related building construction as directed by the Aviation Department. Leads and/or coordinates with Aviation vertical project management team(s).  Working conditions are in an office or construction environment with occasional exposure to temperature extremes, traffic construction. Exercises functional supervision over assigned staff.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Oversees the customer service initiatives and supports the mission of the Aviation Department’s Construction and Development Division and Capital Improvements Program.
  • Directs and participates in Aviation project development.
  • Develops and monitors construction and professional services contracts.
  • Leads, facilitates, conducts and develops the Aviation Department’s Design Review Committee.
  • Leads, develops and enforces organizational Design Criteria and Standards for the Department.
  • Serves as the Aviation Department’s American Disabilities Act (ADA) Coordinator.
  • Conducts Quality Assurance inspections during all phases of construction.
  • Reviews consultant and tenant design drawings for constructability and code compliance.
  • Establishes and supervises the development and planning of preliminary programs, budgets, and schedules to meet project needs and makes recommendations on project delivery methods.
  • Assists with the consultant selection process and oversees and manages their work products; reporting any issues that will delay project delivery.
  • Reviews plans, specifications, cost estimates, and inspects sites during construction operations.
  • Oversees city staff and the consultants as they coordinate with contractors and client departments and communicates with various department representatives.
  • Develops reports and presentations on projects to Aviation staff and the general public.
  • Oversees staff adherence to department policies on records and file management procedures.
  • Programs, designs, draws, and writes technical specifications for Aviation/airport projects.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as directed as required.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in architecture.
  • Valid Class ‘C’ Texas Driver’s License.
  • Licensed to practice as a Registered Architect in the State of Texas.
  • Must obtain a license to practice in the State of Texas within one (1) year of employment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be able to sit, stand, and/or walk for a prolonged period of time (ex. walking great distances, climbing stairs and ladders to get to a project site, etc).
  • Must be able to bend and pick up samples that weigh 10lbs or less (ex. raising a sample to ensure a color match).
  • Previous project management experience at an operating airport.
  • Thorough knowledge of architectural design, drafting, detailing, building materials, building codes, construction techniques, and costs.
  • Proven knowledge of general architecture practice including programming, site planning, civil, structural, mechanical and electrical engineering.
  • Responsibility for all architectural design aspects of large or complex projects.
  • Proven ability to manage project deliverables and deliver through commissioning on time and budget.
  • Proven ability to delegate work and provide oversight of group work plans.
  • A portfolio and minimum 10 years of work experience as an Architect, preferably with 5 years at medium/large hub airport.
  • Knowledge of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) design and construction rules, regulations, procedures.
  • Experience in the development and monitoring of construction and professional services contracts.
  • Familiarity with and ability to read and understand both engineering and architectural plans.
  • Knowledge of construction practices, materials, systems, and the ability to develop cost estimates and schedules for construction projects.
  • Knowledge of construction material inspection and testing procedures, methods, and techniques.
  • In-Depth understanding and ability to use CAD, AutoCAD, Revit, and Project Scheduling software.
  • Knowledge of surveying principals.
  • Knowledge of Building Codes, International Building Code, NFPA codes, etc.; especially their application in Aviation and at public airports.
  • Experience leading, facilitating, conducting and developing the Aviation Department’s Design Review Committee.
  • Experience leading, developing and enforcing organizational Design Criteria and Standards for the Department.
  • Extensive knowledge of Federal, State and local ADA/Accessibility requirements, codes and laws; especially TAS requirements.
  • Knowledge of construction permitting requirements.
  • Ability to lead, develop and mentor junior staff members in a public sector environment.
  • Experience conducting Quality Assurance inspections during all phases of construction.
  • Experience reviewing consultant and tenant design drawings for constructability and code compliance.
