General Description and Classification Standards

Provides supervision and direction to the staff of the security department.  Conducts security audits and reports on status of airport security.  May assume responsibility for the department in the absence of the assistant director.

 

Supervision Received

Normally receives guidance regarding group objectives, scheduling, unusual priorities, etc. but is free to set work methods and individual assignments.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities   These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive.  May perform other duties as assigned.

Plans, organizes and directs the daily activities of the security staff.  Assigns staff according to daily need.

Supervises and evaluates staff and ensures assignments are completed within standards.  Counsels staff with regard to individual performance and plans developmental activities as needed.

Conducts security audits throughout the airport and reports deficiencies observed.

Interacts with federal, state and local agencies concerning security procedures and initiatives.

May supervise other staff e.g. contract guards, etc. providing security to the airport.

Develops and revises policy and procedures to meet changing needs of security at the airport.

Monitors the issuance of security badges at the airport.

Prepares a variety of reports and documents to meet requirements of security directives.

 

Decision Making

Develops revisions to policies and procedures when needed and recommends to security director.  Makes decisions on routine staff issues and procedures within prescribed guidelines.

 

Leadership Provided

Provides managerial direction to security staff and other contractors working with the security department.  Serves as mentor and trainer to newer staff members.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities This is a partial listing of necessary knowledges, skills, and abilities required to perform the job successfully.  It is not an exhaustive list.

Considerable knowledge of applicable federal, state and local aviation regulations regarding airport safety.

Knowledge of sources of information necessary to maintain subject matter competence.

Good skill in using computers and other security equipment utilized by the airport.  Skill in communicating orally and in writing.

Ability to understand, interpret and apply regulations, procedures and policy regarding airport security.  Ability to effectively communicate and interact with managers, employees and the public.
