Assistant City Attorney II (Aviation)

The City of Charlotte owns and operates Charlotte Douglas International Airport, managed by the City’s Aviation Department.  This position is part of a team of attorneys within the City Attorney’s Office that is responsible for providing comprehensive legal services to the Aviation Department.

The Assistant City Attorney II for Aviation is physically located at the Airport.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide legal advice & counsel on complex legal matters
Identify issues within complex operational / business / legal framework of Airport
Take initiative to analyze issues providing accurate & timely advice
Ensure compliance with all local / state / federal laws specific to airport operation
Analyze & prepare variety of legal documents
Negotiate & draft agreements / settlements
Conduct legal research & render legal opinions
Represent City at all levels of federal & state courts as needed

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Considerable knowledge of constitutional / federal / state / local laws affecting airports & municipal government
Ability to work collaboratively with others
Analyze issues from legal & practical perspective / provide clear advice & counsel
Possess business acumen with ability to negotiate transactions effectively
Ability to master new material quickly / manage diverse legal portfolio / handle fast-paced environment
Ability to think creatively to solve problems
Ability to work independently & exercise sound judgment
Knowledge of judicial procedures & rules of evidence
Knowledge of established precedents & sources of legal reference applicable to airports / municipalities
Ability to prepare & try moderately complex civil cases
Ability to establish & maintain effective working relationships with colleagues / public / elected & appointed officials / stakeholders
Experience with airport-related issues and/or North Carolina municipal law
