Reporting to the General Manager (GM), Airport Systems, the Senior Airport Systems Analyst is responsible for leading and understanding all technological aspects for each of the Airport Systems including architecture, physical devices and peripherals, system integrations, database configuration and application design and setup. You will act as an IT liaison to airport stakeholders and will be the technology subject matter expert for Airport Systems IT projects and assist GM in leading and mentoring Airport Systems Analysts and Specialists.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Understand all IT Terminal and Airport Systems (e.g. Passenger and Baggage Processing, Services, Wayfinding, Airfield and Groundside Systems, Security, Safety & Access) to guide and support System Analysts.
  • Provide technology leadership and understanding in all technological aspects (i.e. architecture, physical devices and peripherals, system integrations, database configuration and application design and setup) for each of the Airport Systems.
  • Build and maintain a strong knowledge of the Calgary Airport Authority’s (YYC) operations, systems and applications, their interdependencies and integration points
    Conduct research on emerging products and IT solutions to support innovation, systems improvement, and IT planning
  • Act as the design and technical expert and system steward when working with Airport IT Capital projects to ensure they are designed and functioning to meet our business and IT needs and advise the project teams to make course corrections where required
  • Build and maintain a strong knowledge of YYC’s baggage system, operational processes, technological aspects as well as its interdependencies and integration points
  • Partner with our baggage operations team on a regular basis to ensure all systems are running as intended and provide solutions and planning for any baggage challenges that might arise
  • Create plans, documentation, and recommended steps to implement, manage and communicate the ongoing changes and requirements across all aspects of IT operations
  • Develop business cases along with associated cost/benefit analysis, risks, implications, and options
  • Act as key technical liaison to both internal and external stakeholders and partners
  • Identify current process issues and operational objectives and explore recommended changes to achieve efficient and effective processes and alignment between technical components and operational requirements
  • Effectively communicate with all parties that may be affected by specific planning activities (e.g.   Project Sponsors, Airlines, Transport Canada, Nav Canada, Environment Canada, and various other Federal, Provincial and City Departments and internal stakeholders)
  • Manage interactions between IT, Infrastructure, and other departments to ensure that all data implications and project dependencies are understood, communicated, and planned for
  • Define operational limitations and communicate them to the management team to deal with gaps that may stem from multiple project changes being looked at independently
  • Research and present materials to assist in the development of new solutions to business processes with a vision to incremental improvement
  • Develop, deliver, communicate/coordinate presentations from vendors and/or internal business units to ensure that the aspects of the project/initiative are understood at all levels of YYC
  • Provide mentoring and training to other members of the team
  • Coordinate other Airport Systems team members to achieve success in larger initiatives and systems operations
  • Act as liaison for the Airport Systems team in absence of GM including running weekly team status meetings
  • Assess operational priorities and work orders delegating to others when necessary
  • Understand and analyze the business needs/requirements for Airport Systems projects by bringing together key stakeholders
  • Apply IT modeling techniques and methodologies which facilitate the capture, expression and review of requirements and specifications in a commonly understood manner
  • Understand business process definition and documentation practices to ensure that processes are reviewed analyzed and agreed between all groups affected in order to move the project forward and ensure that operational requirements are met
  • Analyze the impact and changes required to business processes and systems related to a variety of organizational projects to ensure that the evolution of systems and data sources are aligned
  • Understand, develop, and share expertise related to the technical systems that make up the Airport IT Systems and workflow automation processes to ensure that projects adequately identify all aspects that are involved in the definition, delivery, and successful implementation of corporate change management
  • Prepare Terms of Reference, Project Scope and associated deliverables and related technical documentation
  • Ensure deliverables are created according to current defined methodology and tools
  • Work with our Supply Chain team to obtain/procure IT hardware, software, communication, other specialized equipment and IT consultants and services
  • Analyze and participate in system testing needs
  • Identify training requirements in an effort to transition systems into operations
  • Develop, modify and/or validate Terms of References for changes to applications and systems
  • Deal with vendor delivery problems by analyzing stakeholder and business impact and negotiate alternative

  • Outline the long-term operational implications then hand off operations and support responsibilities to appropriate operational groups
  • Participate in the development of the Annual Capital Program as it relates to the ongoing changes and demands for the development and evolution of airport information, application, and system needs at both Calgary International and Springbank Airports
  • Plan, organize and direct the definition and documentation of process change delivered by annual capital and operational programs including aspects of YYC, airlines, tenants, and other related IT business processes under the IT Restoration Programs
  • Analyze and provide input into the requirements for Capital Projects to ensure compliance with YYC’s policies and standards within the overall framework of YYC’s Values, Mission Statement and Vision while maintaining positive internal and external stakeholder relations and mitigating risk to Airport Operations and passenger processing capacities
  • Prepare and submit Business Cases and supporting documentation for ad hoc funding requests for smaller planning projects
  • Work collaboratively with other managers, technical support people, and outsourced contract support personnel
  • Stay current on systems trends by traveling to other airports, attending courses, conferences, and seminars
  • Participate in various organizations to maintain and foster business relations and to update technical knowledge (i.e. participation in events such as ACI, IAAE, and Future Travel Experience)
  • Maintain and develop operational knowledge of business applications to support the effective use of technology and to develop plans which will maximize YYC’s investment in the future
  • Act as the point of escalation for our operations department when they are unable to troubleshoot issues in the event of critical system failures


  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer/Electronics Engineering with at least 8 years Information Technology work experience
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience leading Airport Systems including architecture, physical devices and peripherals, system integrations, database configuration and application design and setup
  • Strong understanding of all airport systems and dependencies as well as understanding of the hands-on components of the systems with the ability to make changes as required
  • Extensive theoretical and practical knowledge in areas such as IT systems architecture, lifecycle management, business process reengineering, workshop facilitation, and requirements gathering, workflow automation and integration practices
  • Strong understanding of all technology aspects of complex baggage systems as well as operational processes
  • Experience working in complex 24/7/365 public facility
  • Proven experience as a technology subject matter experience working in major airport projects, having successfully delivered the projects to operations
  • Familiar with IATA practices and programs and standards, including proposed draft and final Resolutions and Recommended Practices (RP’s)
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to adapt communications style to others to ensure common understanding and clarity in scope and requirements definitions
  • Time management, prioritization and organizational skills in order to successfully manage multiple projects, multiple tasks, multiple priorities, and concurrent deadlines
  • Cost control skills are required to foresee all aspects of the costs to be included in the project as well as manage the scope of potential cost overruns and make timely adjustments to control overall planning project costs
  • Risk management skills are required to recognize and reduce potential risks while dealing with uncertainties such as scope creep, cost overruns, schedule delays, 3rd party delays, and vendor delivery problems
  • Judgment and decision-making skills to manage quality and accuracy of the plans including the impact on the organization, costs to implement, schedule, etc.
  • Proven negotiation skills regarding consultant fees, contractor change orders and customer requests
  • Able to build and maintain relationships within the team including consultants, contractors, stakeholders and suppliers
  • Understanding of human dynamics and of the different team player styles to effectively team-build and lead competing stakeholder requirements or manage between business requirements and technical limitations
  • Conflict resolution skills to resolve conflicts or facilitate the resolution of them by engaging more senior levels of management
  • Understanding the overall objectives, organizational impact, and change barriers and managing these through using the appropriate processes implemented at the right instance
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Restricted Area Identification Card (RAIC)


  • Strong understanding of Airport operational processes and procedures with a key focus on baggage systems, with a working knowledge of IATA messaging standards
  • Working knowledge of the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) Passenger Services Conference Resolution manual and current status and direction of IATA working groups.
  • Working knowledge of the airport policies and procedures including the voice and data infrastructure guidelines, Safety
  • Management Systems (SMS), Video Surveillance Policy, Common Use Policy and other policies and procedures related to IT Security and Emergency Preparedness Planning and Procedures
  • Understanding of the Airport Authority Change Management process
  • Ability to travel to conferences approximately two weeks a year
